1. Nwoye consistently had a personality conflict with his father Okonkwo. Okonkwo strongly represented the old ways, so Nwoye is attracted to the Christian faith.
2. Nwoye maintains doubts of the old rules and old ways of the tribe, possibly seeing some of them as dated. In particular, are the killing of twins, and the murder of Ikemefuna.
3. He is attracted to stories, particularly in the style told by his mother and classified as effeminate by his tribe. The Christians have a wealth of stories, but do not look down on any of the stories as being effeminate, (a challenge to one's manhood). In such a way, Nwoye is more able to fit in with the Christians.
4. The Christians attract him and others by not looking down on them for reasons the tribe might.
5. His father Okonkwo is too harsh on him and beats him.
