Eponine & her parents treat Cosette cruelly, using her as a servant. Jean Valjean goes to get Cosette & pays the inkeepers to take her. About 5-10 years later, Cosette is with Valjean. Eponine & Marius are speaking & then he runs into Cosette. The two of them fall in love, but Eponine loves Marius as well.

Cosette was born out of wedlock. Fantine was her mother and her father's name was Felix Tholomyes. Fantine had been attracted to Felix, but he rejected her after he learned she was pregnant. Abandoned, Fantine tried to support herself and her daughter, but she was unable to. Upon seeing a healthy pair of girls, the daughters of the Thenardiers, Fantine begged the innkeeping couple to take in her daughter. The couple agreed. However, they turned out to be cruel. Despite Cosette's small size and young age, they forced her to work and act as the maid. By this time, Fantine had moved away and was sending what little money she had managed to procure to the Thenardiers. The couple continuously demanded increasing amounts of money from the mother, forcing her to extremes. Eventually, Fantine fell ill and died. Jean Valjean who had listened to Fantine's dying wish, went to fetch Cosette. After many events, Valjean effectively adopts the child. Cosette eventually falls in love with Marius.
