Roman history lasted for 1,200 years and Rome's system of government changed over time. It was a monarchy for 244 years, a republic for 482 years and under the absolute rule of emperors for 503 years. During the monarchy the king was the most important person. During the republic, the consuls (the two annually elected heads of the republic) and the patricians (the aristocracy), who sat in the powerful Roman senate, were the most important people. During the period of rule by emperors the emperor, who wielded absolute power, was the most important person. The patricians retained a degree of importance in the first 200 years of this period, but then this importance faded.
