The jaguarundi is the closest Puma relative; however, there are currently 6 recognized subspecies of Puma concolor:
P. c. cougar: North America
P. c. costaricensis: Central America
P. c. capricornensis: eastern South America
P. c. concolor: northern South America
P. c. cabrerae: central South America
P. c. puma: southern South America.
The puma has only one close relative with which it shares the genus puma - the jaguarundi. It looks quite similar to the puma but is considerably smaller. See the image above of a jaguarundi.
