∙ 13y agoBesides the obvious title character, the main characters are Horatio (Hamlet's friend), Claudius (his villainous uncle), Gertrude (his mother), Ophelia (his would-be lover), Polonius (Ophelia's father) and Laertes (Ophelia's brother). All of the characters listed die, except Horatio.

Hamlet and Claudius are protagonist and antagonist, Polonius is essential because his death is a trigger for the tragedy, and Laertes is essential because his is the instrument of revenge. Gertrude is essential because it is through her that Polonius dies. Some would want to replace Gertrude with Horatio, but Horatio is just an observer; he doesn't actually do anything.

The only protagonist in Hamlet is Hamlet, who emerges victorious only in the sense that he does end up getting his revenge on Claudius. Everyone else dies in the process, however.
