He was a French revolutionary and the leader of the radical Jacobins in the National Assembly. He wanted France to become a repubic and strongly supported the execution of King Louis XVI. He was elected into the Committee of Public Safety in 1793, and he was appointed as President of the National Assembly. Unfortunately his name is strongly tied with the Reign of Terror (which lasted from 1793 to his death in 1794. He guillotined thousands of people. At first the Royalists, next the supporters of them, next the people who were suspected to be supporters of the enemy groups, next everyone who knew a suspected person, from all the layers of the society from nobles to poor peasants (rather paranoic), and last some of the Jacobins who were not ethusiastic enough about the affairs in course. Ironically, Robespierre was guillotined at the end. And that was the end of the Reign of Terror (the peiod of the French Revolution was called this way because it was a nightmare). Some historians say that he personally was against the executions, but they were justified by the great danger, France was in at that time.
