Gaffer is the chief electrician of a film or television production responsible for the execution of the lighting plan for the production. This term originated from the moving of overhead electrical equipment using a gaff.

The 'Gaffer' in the motion picture industry is traditionally the chief electrician or lighting technician. (This word comeds directly from old English fairground slang where the gaffer was the man who controlled ferris wheels, roundabouts and other moving rides.)
