Ultrasound is a regular sound pressure wave with a frequency beyond the human range of hearing. In 1893, Sir Francis Galton built a whistle that made such a high-frequency tone. In 1917, Paul Langevin built an ultrasound emitter and receiver device to detect icebergs, which is the first technical application of ultrasound technologies. This marked the birth of general ultrasonography.
The first medical application of ultrasonography was conducted by George Döring Ludwig at the Naval Medical Research Institute, who in 1949 explored the characteristics of ultrasound when applied to meat and organs from animals. Although he first published the results of his work on June 16, 1949, it was not released publicly until October, 1949, due to the Naval Medical Research Institute's decision to classify the data as secret.
During the early 1950's, Dr. John Wild, with the help of his colleague, Dr. John Reid, miniaturized the technology, allowing the use of a handheld device that fed information back to a central processor.

Home Ultrasound Therapy using a portable ultrasound machine can be very effective, just as effective as medical or professional ultrasound units. The difference between a chiropractor of doctor's ultrasound machine and a a home ultrasound machine is the doctor's ultrasound device utilizes continuous waves while a home version uses pulsed ultrasonic waves. This makes the home units safe for the general public, as continuous wave ultrasound can be dangerous if used in the wrong hands. When using a home ultrasound therapy massage machine, you will treat more frequently than if you were have ultrasound treatments at a physical therapist's office, but the results will be the same and in the long run, you will save a substantial amount of money.
