As of April 21th 2012, Japan's Prime Minister is Yoshihiko Noda (野田 佳彦 : Noda Yoshihiko). He has been in office as well as serving as head of the Democratic Party of Japan or DPJ since September 2nd of 2011, following the resignation of his predecessor, Naoto Kan, from both offices. Prior to his election, Noda served as the Minister of Finance under his predecessor, who had also moved from that Ministry seat to the top post.

Japan's current leader (as of January 2015) is Shinzo Abe. He is the Prime Minister of the country, and was originally appointed by the Diet (Japan's Parliament) and then appointed by Emperor Akihito in December 2012, and re-appointed in December, 2014. In japan, the Prime Minister is a day-to-day head of state. The Emperor has held an honorific role (similar to the Queen of England) since the end of World War II. This is Abe's second time as Prime Minister, making him only the second Prime Minister to serve two separate terms. He became Prime Minister in 2006 and resigned a year later for health reasons. Abe is the head of the (Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which has ruled Japan for most of the time since WWII. In his current term, Abe is trying to improve Japan's economy but he is also focused on changing Japan's constitution to allow Japanese military forces to help fight alongside the country's allies. He has also exacerbated relations with Asian neighbors such as China and South Korea with his conservative views on wartime atrocities committed by Japan.
