The leader of the Presbyterian church is the Moderator of the General Assembly, an elected post, and a new moderator is elected every time the General Assembly meets. This leadership does not confer any power on the Moderator to determine doctrine or require Presbyterians to do anything, but is a position more of encouragement and persuasion. The second most powerful person is the Stated Clerk of the General Assembly. This is also an elected office, but the Stated Clerk is often re-elected to additional terms (the Moderator cannot be re-elected). The Clerk controls the administrative and legal aspects of the national church.

∙ 14y agoThe Cumberland Presbyterian Church is lead by its members. The government of the United States is based on the Presbyterian form of government. Elders are elected by the members of the congregation and serve as a governing body, the Session, for the local church (much like city councils). The Session sends a representative/delegate to the Presbytery meetings (much like representatives to the state legislature) and Presbyteries send commissioners to General Assembly (much like states have congressional representatives or senators). General Assembly is held one week each summer and a moderator is elected for the year. The moderator does not make decisions for the church. He or she is basically there to run the meetings.
So the people in the pews lead the Cumberland Presbyterian Church through representation.
