Rubeus Hagrid was expelled from Hogwarts when he was in his third year. Then headmaster, Armado Dippet, believed he was behind the attacks from the Chamber of Secrets that resulted in the death of Myrtle Warren (Moaning Myrtle). Tom Riddle was actually behind these, but blamed Hagrid who was known for keeping strange and often dangerous pets. There was no way to prove it was Hagrid (given he didn't actually do it) which is probably why his only punishment was to be expelled, rather than imprisoned.
Albus Dumbledore kept him on as gamekeeper knowing he was innocent but unable to prove it.
