Traditionally the superior of a Christian abbey is an Abbot, if male, or an Abbess, if female. Though the Abbot or Abbess was the spiritual leader of the abbey, he or she would be subservient to the bishop of their particular diocese.

an Abbott is the spiritual director of a monastery. Abbey is derived from this word- by the way Abbey Road- album title can be ( translated) as Church Street- what famous landmark once stood on Church street- Oddly Here comes the sun comes on with screaming mortar-bomb sound effects! answer- World Trade Center.

ANSWER:

The superior in a monastery is indeed the Abbot. The word is derived from Greek 'abbas' meaning father. In a monastery of ancient times, monks were obliged to take the three vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Within the monastery the vow of obedience meant that the abbot's rule was absolute. The abbot, within an enclosed monastery was also a titular bishop and entitled to wear the apparel and trappings of a bishop. In modern times, monks still take the three vows including the vow of obedience but there is room for discussion with the abbot.

Did women run any abbeys?

An abbey is simply a building where monks or nuns live. Typically, they live in isolation from the world. Since an abbey could be home to either monks or nuns (but never both) than who ever the mother superior was would be in charge of running the abbey. Please note that even a mother superior would not be above even the simplest of deacons. They are not members of the clergy and have no authority over them, even if they are in charge of an abbey. The same is true for monks.
