The 12 tribes of Israel take their names from the 12 sons of Jacob (whose name was changed to Israel). Jacob's 12 sons were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Zebulun, Issachar, Dan, Gad, Asher, Naphtali, Joseph and Benjamin. You can find these names in chapter 49 of Genesis and other places in The Bible. Usually, but not always, Joseph is NOT listed as one of the 12 tribes. Instead, his first 2 sons, Manessah and Ephraim, are named. That means that the 12 tribes usually contain 13 names. Chapter 48 of Genesis explains why these 2 grandsons of Jacob are listed in the 12 tribes.

The twelve tribes of Israel are scattered over the face of the earth. The Israelis who live in Israel today are Hebrews, but many of them do not know what tribe they are from as time has wiped out most of the genealogies. Their are a few who were able to keep up with their own personal genealogies (with great difficulty) and do know from what tribe they are from.

We are told in the bible that the day is approaching when God will draw all Hebrews back to Israel.

The twelve tribes of Israel were divided between two Kingdoms, Israel and Judah. The Kingdom of Israel, containing ten of the tribes, was destroyed by the Assyrian Empire and their culture was lost. To this day, nobody knows where they are. Judah, comprising the tribes of Judah and Benjamin as well as the Levites, survived up to the Babylonian conquest and are the ancestors of today's Jewry. They managed to preserve their identities and were termed "Jews" by the empires that controlled them. Jews who are Levites know they are Levites. The remainder of Jews from both Judah and Benjamin have mostly forgot which lineage they belonged to, but since Judah was much more massive of a tribe than Benjamin, most of them are likely from Judah.

The great majority of Jews today, some 80% or so, are descended from the tribe of Judah (plus converts and descendents of converts). The remaining 20% include Levites (from the tribe of Levi), Cohanim (also a part of the Levites), the entire Tribe of Benjamin, and a small percentage from every one of the remaining tribes. (When the Ten Tribes were carried off into Assyria and didn't return, a few of them had already mixed into the tribe of Judah before that, through marriage. Also, the Talmud relates [Megillah 14b] that, one century after the Ten Tribes were exiled, Jeremiah journeyed to where they were and brought some of them back to Judea. Thus, today's Jewry includes a small percentage of every one of the Lost Tribes. See for example the Talmud, Pesachim 4a.)

As to the location of the bulk of the lost Ten Tribes, because of the lack of a continuous tradition in this particular matter, we can only speculate. Some well-known claims, such as the suggestion that the Native Americans are the Lost Israelite Tribes, we can confidently dismiss offhand. Other claims, such as that which has been suggested concerning the Pathani (Pashtun), are less far-fetched but must for the time being remain nothing more than a guess.
