Who killed William the second?

William II of England was killed when hunting by an arrow fired by another member of the hunting party. Because the king was known for his terrible temper and his many clashes with the people around him it was quickly assumed that he had been shot at on purpose. Walter Tirel (or Thurol) was later named as the guilty party, although other names were sometimes mentioned as well.

The early chronicles state that Tirel hit William while trying to shoot a passing stag, which would make it an accident. Historians are divided on the subject and will probably remain so, as there is no hard evidence on what really happened. Walter Tirel fled to France and remained in exile there for the rest of his life. But the fact that he was not stripped of all his posessions for regicide or high treason and that his family remained in favour is an indication that at the time it was seen as an accidental death.
