Joseph Lister published a paper (Antiseptic Principle of the Practice of Surgery) in 1867, based on the works of Louis Pasteur in studying putrefaction. He advocated the use of carbolic acid to kill germs. His paper preceded the widespread use of antiseptics in surgery.

Joseph Lister, a British surgeon, doubted this explanation. For many years he had explored the inflammation of wounds, at the Glasgow infirmary. These observations had led him to considered that infection was not due to bad air alone, and that 'wound sepsis' was a form of decomposition. He used formalin. He is known as the father of Modern surgery. Various antiseptics were discovered later.
