The first electric light was made in 1800 by Humphry Davy.
Then the inventor Thomas Alva Edison (in the USA) experimented with thousands of different filaments to find just the right materials to glow well and be long-lasting. In 1879, Edison discovered that a carbon filament in an oxygen-free bulb glowed but did not burn up for 40 hours. Edison eventually produced a bulb that could glow for over 1500 hours.

Joseph swan of England
The first to make a bulb was by Humphry Davy (an Englishman) in 1809. Thomas Alva Edison improved the invention and based his improvements on a patent he purchased from inventors Henry Woodward & Matthew Evans who patented their bulb in 1875.
The light bulb was invented by roughly 23 people. Though the first person to create somthing that resembles the light bulb we have today would probaly be Joseph Swan. (Thomas Edison patented, streamlined, and commercialized other peoples inventions and designs. This does not diminish the impact he had on history he simply did not invent the lightbulb)
