A monastery is designed to be self-contained and self-reliant. Monks and nuns lived in monasteries. Some monasteries were where people went for medical treatment and some were places of for learning, or for stopping in while traveling.
Saint Benedict lived in a monastery.

Monasteries were (and are) homes to nuns and/or monks who spend most of their lives within the confines of the monastery working and praying. They are different from priests, sisters and brothers who live in rectories, friaries or convents but who work in the outside world.
