There were three separate investigations after the war to try and determine who the betrayer or betrayers were of the eight people hiding in the annex. None of the investigations could find enough evidence to indict anyone. Given the time span now since it happened (67 years) it is unlikely it will ever be known.

Dutch historians investigate new claims to identity of person who revealed hiding place of Jewish family. It was an anonymous phone call in the hot summer of 1944 which led the Gestapo and Dutch security police to the concealed annexe in a canalside house where Anne Frank and her family had hidden for almost two years.

One of the guys who was working in the building, Wilhem van Maaren, was very curious about things around the office and he stole food. NO one really trusted him. It is believed he had suspicion about people hiding in the building and warned the gestapo, but how they actually got exposed was someone found out or heard them one night and told this guy and his wife said to turn them in for the money!
