The difference between a protectorate and a colony is that a protectorate is a separate country from the main part whilst a colony is ruled by the nation. Eg. The Ottoman Empire had a protectorate of the Khanate of the Crimea whilst say Ottoman Arabia was a colony. Hope this helps.
