The minoans
Using the sun moon and stars
astrolabes (an early form of sextant), charts, compasses, cross staffs, nocturnals (a way to tell time using stars), traverse boards and almanacs
they followed birds and used the stars in the sky to Navigate
Each star represents a state
Those using the stars as navigation, such as sailor who have no other landmarks to navigate with, can find the brightest star (the North Star) with relative ease and use its near-unerroring position in the sky, to devine the desired direction of their destination.
The minoans
They used the stars to navigate by using the north star
they where used to navigate using sun and stars :)
Using the stars to navigate
Modern ships navigate by use of GPS units and computers. In past times, mariners used visual aids like a sextant to navigate using the stars and sun.
Using the sun moon and stars
The old sailors went hugging the coast line. Using the stars to navigate is called celestial navigation.
People would navigate using celestial events like the stars or setting sun.
By Using the sun, moon and stars
Because Polaris is located at exactly North, and is easily located using the pointer stars on the big dipper, and the Sun always rises in east and sets in the west.
Look at the position of the stars. See what degree they are at and you'll know the time. That's how ships used to navigate. The position of the stars will allow a knowledgable observer to tell the time. The observable stars depends on location and time of the year.
Look for the star that doesn't appear to move in the sky, and looks like all the other stars are rotating around it. This is the north star. Following the North star leads you north.
