During the 1912 Presidential Campaign he was wounded in the chest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 14 October. The impact of the bullet was reduced when it passed through his steel glasses case and a folded 50 page speech in his breast pocket. The bullet was never removed. The assassin, John Flammang Schrank was declared insane and died of natural causes was sentenced to the Central State Mental Hospital where he died after 29 years in 1943
