Edward Davis Wood, Jr was a film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is most well-known for his poorly-made Science Fiction films from the 1950s and 60s. Many covered controversial topics such as teen crime sprees (The Violent Years, his most financial successful) and transvestism (Glen or Glenda, an almost-autobiography). Wood himself was a heterosexual transvestite and enlisted the help of other social outcasts for his productions Befriending B-list celebrities like Bela Lugosi and Maila Nurmi (Vampira), Wood was notorious for shooting scenes in one take, usually because of his extremely low budget or lack of proper permits. His films also made liberal use of prerecorded stock footage. Wood never achieved any commercial success in his lifetime and eventually resorted to making softcore pornographic films in the 1970s. A lifelong alcoholic, Wood died in 1978 less than a week after being evicted from his last apartment.
In 1980, many of Wood's works were "rediscovered" by film critic Michael Medved and included in the book The Golden Turkey Awards. Medved ranked Plan 9 from Outer Space (Wood's magnum opus) as the "worst movie ever made". His work soon saw a surge in popularity, gaining a large cult following. In 1994, Tim Burton directed a biopic based on Ed Wood, starring Johnny Depp in the title role.
