The original stadium (called the Singer Bowl) was built for the 1964 Wold's Fair and subsequently became under used. It was renamed Louis Armstrong Stadium sometime in the 1970's in honor of the great jazz singer who lived nearby (by this time it was mostly used for concerts.) When the USTA relocated the US Open (Tennis Tournament) to this location in 1978 (from Forest Hills,) they refurbished the venue and retained the name.
