The lookouts at the time were Frederick Fleet and Archie Jewell, who had only relieved their colleagues Reg Lee and George Symons about 20 minutes previously. Fleet was the first person to spot the iceberg looming up out of the darkness.

Both men survived the sinking, although Fleet was scapegoated by many surviving crew members for not having spotted the 'berg sooner, and was shunned by them, despite being cleared of any culpability at the Official Enquiry. He ended up as a newspaper seller on the streets of his native Southampton, until he committed suicide in 1965 following the death of his wife, by hanging himself from the washing line in his back garden.

Archie Jewell served in the Merchant Navy in WW1, and died when his ship the Donegal was sunk by a German submarine in the English Channel on 17th April 1917.

When the Titanic?

I assume you mean when did the R.M.S. Titanic sink. the notable- probaby the best-known Maritime disaster occured on the night of April l4-l5 of l9l2. True, this occured duting the vessel"s maiden voyage. By an odd coincidence Income Tax day occurs on April l5 ( this was not the reason date was chosen!) and the actual death of Lincoln, who survived for some hours after the fatal shot- was April l5, of l865. There may be a Titanic tie-in.
