It could be Run-DMC, when they collaborated with Aerosmith on their 1975 hit "Walk this Way", making a new cover of it in 1986. I know that that brought Hip-Hop/Rap out into the mainstream public, and the genres became more accepted because an old rock band like Aerosmith were involved. I could be wrong, though.
