Harold MacMillan- he had formerly been Chancellor to his predecessor Anthony Eden, but took over when Eden resigned in disgrace in Januray '57 following his creation of the Suez Crisis the previous year.

MacMillan was elected in his own right in 1960- he was in power during the Berlin and Cuba Crises of '61 and '62, and can be credited with very largely having solved the latter, as President John F.Kennedy deferred to MacMillan as an elder statesman and was constantly on the telephone to him for advice as to what to do. However, he failed to intervene to prevent the execution of James Hanratty, who was hanged for murder the same year and whose guilt was (and has always been) extremely suspect.

The Profumo Scandal of 1963 brought down MacMillan's Defence Minister John Profumo, although when MacMillan resigned in October '63 it was NOT because of this, as many people believe- it was because he had been wrongly diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer and did not want to die in office. In fact, he went on to live for a further 23 years, moving up to the House of Lords as Lord Stockton and dying in 1986 at the ripe old age of 92!!
