The Epic of Gilgamesh is an epic poem from Ancient Mesopotamia and is among the earliest known works of literary fiction. Scholars believe that it originated as a series of Sumerian legends and poems about the mythological hero-king Gilgamesh, which were gathered into a longer Akkadian poem much later; the most complete version existing today is preserved on 12 clay tablets in the library collection of the 7th century BC Assyrian king Ashurbanipal. It was originally titled He who Saw the Deep or Surpassing All Other Kings Gilgamesh might have been a real ruler in the late Early Dynastic II period (ca. 27th century Bc).The essential story revolves around the relationship between Gilgamesh, who has become distracted and disheartened by his rule, and a friend, Enkidu, who is half-wild and who undertakes dangerous quests with Gilgamesh. Much of the epic focuses on Gilgamesh's thoughts of loss following Enkidu's death. It is about their becoming human together, and has a high emphasis on immortality. A large portion of the book shows Gilgamesh's search for immortality after Enkidu's death.

The epic's prelude offers a general introduction to Gilgamesh, king of Uruk, who was two-thirds god and one-third man. He built magnificent ziggurats, or temple towers, surrounded his city with high walls, and laid out its orchards and fields. He was physically beautiful, immensely strong, and very wise. Although Gilgamesh was godlike in body and mind, he began his kingship as a cruel despot. The Epic of Gilgamesh recounts the exploits of the impulsive, selfish and violent king of Uruk. Aftert the gods create and wild man, Enkidu, who is his equal in strength, the pair travel to the cedar forest and slay its divinely appointed and fearsome guardian Humbaba. Then, after Gilgamesh rejects the advances of the goddess Ishtar, she sends the Bull of Heaven to kill him. Gilgamesh and Enkidu slaughter the Bull and insult the goddess further. As punishment for these acts of rebellion the gods decide that Enkidu must die. After a grand funeral, the dejected king roams the wild in search of the immortal flood hero, Utnapishtim. His aim is to learn the secret of eternal life and escape the fate of his friend. After finding Utnapishtim at the ends of the earth, the flood hero tells Gilgamesh about how he escaped a great deluge sent by the gods and was ultimately rewarded with immortality for preserving life on earth. Since this was a one-off occurrence, there will be no similar opportunity for Gilgamesh. The king returns to Uruk empty handed but wise. He seems to have finally accepted his mortality, his responsibilities towards his people, and his place in the divine scheme of things.
