The Titanic's ship designer was Thomas J. Andrews, a young man of just 36 who was considered a genius designer. The company that built the ship was called Harland and Wolff, which was based in Belfast, Ireland. The company still exists today, but no longer builds passenger liners.

Thomas Andrews traveled on the Titanic's maiden voyage, making notes and observing improvements that would need to be made before future voyages could be made. After the Titanic hit the iceberg, he was one of the first on the scene to survey the damage. Upon learning that the ship was doomed, he retired to the smoking room and sat motionless in a chair. He would not survive.
