The first prophet mentioned in The Bible was Adam. A prophet is someone who hears directly from God and is commissioned by God to speak on His behalf to mankind. A prophet may give knowledge of future events and if he is a true prophet, those events will happen. A false prophet (one who hears his own voice but says it is God's voice) will often make predictions that do not come true and does this to try and obtain kudos for egotistical or fraudulent reasons. Adam is called a prophet because he spoke with God and walked with God in the garden of Eden. He also gave predictions that came true and was commissioned by God to work for Him. An example of God speaking to Adam can be found in Genesis at Chapter 2 and verses 16,17. In verses 23.24 of the same chapter we see Adam, under the authority of God, bringing about the institution of marriage between a man and a woman. The vital part of this section is in verse 24. At this point, Adam and Eve were the only two living souls on earth. In verse 24 Adam makes his first prophetic prediction and says of men and women, "Therefore shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh." Keep in mind that there were no fathers and mothers in the garden at this time so this represents a prediction of a coming event. Because prophets speak by inspiration from God, this tells us that God knew in advance that Adam and Eve would eat of the forbidden fruit, be forced out of the garden of Eden and would have children. We can see from these accounts that Adam was indeed the first prophet who ever walked the earth.
