The last person said Christopher Columbus ... which is wrong. He was the first person to sail around the world, thus proving it was round; but Christopher Columbus never "sailed around the world" and he certainly didn't prove that the earth was round. Babylonian and Greek mariners knew the Earth was round over 2500 years ago. They knew because ships appeared to go below the horizon as they sailed. There's really no way to know who first realized it is round.
The first practical proof that the earth was in fact a sphere was provided by Ferdinand Magellan (and Juan Sebastian Elcano) when they circumnavigated Earth (1519−1521).

The Soviet Union takes credit for sending the first man into orbit around the earth. However, since, Yuri Gagarin did not land in his capsule, it technically does not count as an official orbit. Still, no one disputes that Gagarin did in fact orbit the earth. The first person to orbit the earth and land in his spacecraft was John Glenn of the United States.
