Miriam
The first female to be called a prophetess in the Bible is Miriam, the sister of Moses and Aaron. She is referred to as a prophetess in Exodus 15:20, where she leads the Israelite women in song and dance after the crossing of the Red Sea. Miriam is recognized for her leadership and prophetic role during the Exodus.
The term "prophetess" does not appear explicitly in the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy). However, the concept of female prophets is present, with notable figures like Miriam, who is referred to as a prophetess in Exodus 15:20. The usage of the term "prophetess" itself becomes more prominent in later biblical texts.
