Mount Everest and Mount Godwin-Austen (known also as K2) are the first and second highest mountains in the world. Mount Everest is 8,848m high and K2 is 8,611m high.

The name K2 is derived from the notation used by the Great Trigonometric Survey. Thomas Montgomerie made the first survey of the Karakoram from Mount Haramukh, some 210 km (130 miles) to the south, and sketched the two most prominent peaks, labelling them K1 and K2.
Mount Godwin Austen, or K2 Godwin Austen, Mount, or K2 The Earth's second highest mountain, after Mount Everest, is K2, also known as Mount Godwin Austen and as Dapsang. The peak, 28,253 feet (8,612 meters) high, is in the Karakoram Range of northern Jammu and Kashmir, near the border of Pakistan and China.
