Grant and General Sherman. They campaigned in the South and are the best known for the battle of Vicksburg and the march to Atlanta, respectively.
In 1864, Lincoln appointed US Grant to be the Union's general in chief. This was a choice Lincoln believed was the right one based on US Grant's performance in winning battles and acting in a timely manner. He turned out to be the best general the Union produced.
