The leadership of the Genovese has always been very secretive but especially during that decade. After Vito Genovese died in prison in 1969, Benny "The Squint" Lombardo reportedly took over as official boss. Thomas "Tommy Ryan" Eboli was acting or street boss before he was killed in 1972. Afterwards, Carmine "Little Eli" Zeccardi and later Frank "Funzi" Tieri took over as acting or street boss. Lombardo eventually stepped down as boss in 1981 and was set to hand over the position to Anthony "Fat Tony" Salerno. However, Salerno had a stroke and had to step down. Afterwards, Vincent "The Chin" Gigante became boss. During the 1970's the family was run very much like a committee, with various top members, including those listed above. Others included Gerardo "Gerry" Catena, Michael Miranda, Antonio "Buckaloo' Ferro, and Dominick "Fat Dom" Alongi.
