A French art movement from the late 1860's to the late 1880's. Its name came from Monet's painting "Impression: Sunrise" which was painted in 1872.

The leading impressionists were Monet, Sisley,Pissarro and Renoir.

They painted mainly in the open air rather than the studio and aimed to capture fleeting effects of light and weather.

There are some great original paintings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
