Cole, Jr. Battery B, 328 Field Artillery 85th Infantry Division In 1946, the rules for awarding the Bronze Star Medal was changed such that any soldier who earned the Combat Infantryman's Badge, which was given for close combat at the front lines, was automatically awarded the Bronze Star Medal.
World War Two lasted four years, and found millions of Americans in uniform. No list of Bronze Star Medal recipients exists. There were certainly thousands of BS Medals awarded, and perhaps hundreds of thousands.

While the Silver Star itself was created in 1932, the Citation Star, created in 1918, was its predecessor. Veterans of World War I were eligible to convert the Citation Star, if awarded, to the Silver Star. I know because my grandfather converted his Citation Star for Gallantry in Action to the Silver Star. However, the U.S. government kept very poor official records on this award and you may have trouble finding your WWI veteran's name on a list of recipients.

It was impossible for ANYONE to receive a Silver Star Medal in WWI, as the medal did not exist until the early 1940's.
