Who had the rings in the Lord of the Rings?

There were three hobbits that carried the ring, unless you wish to count Gollum: * Bilbo * Frodo * Sam Bilbo and Frodo took the boat with Gandalf to the Undying Lands in the West. Legend has it that Sam eventually went as well.

Firstlly, the Lady Galadriel, who held Nenya the ring of water. Secondly Lord Elrond, who bore Vilya the ring of air, passed down to him by Gil-Galad. Finally Gandalf bore Narya, the ring of fire, given to him by Cirdan the Shipwright.

Initially, it was forged by the dark lord Sauron along with the other rings made for the other races. When Sauron was defeated, the rings went to Isildur until he was killed and it dropped to the bottom of the lake. When Deagol found the ring on Smeagol's birthday, the fought over it and Smeagol (Gollum) got it. In the Hobbit, Bilbo found it and used it during his adventures after outsmarting Gollum. On Bilbo's 111th birthday, he gave it to Frodo. At one point, Sam has the ring but immediately gave it back to Frodo. Clearly it was destroyed in Mount Doom at the end of the trilogy.
