General Sherman lead his army from Atlanta, Georgia, to Savannah, without having a supply line to support his troops. Sherman believed the war had to be taken to the civilian population and cause them to suffer so they would not want to continue the war any longer. The US and their Allies used the same strategy during the air bombing campaign in World War 2 against both the Germans and the Japanese.

Sherman spread out his forces so he could find food and supplies. It also allowed him to cause more damage to farms, towns, crops, and cattle.

While this happened about 100 years later, the Allies in WW 2 were fighting an enemy that had conquered most of Europe.

Insofar as General Sherman's march, the enemy were Americans and he was destroying supplies that may have aided the Rebels. There were Union abuses in the march and in Washington DC, General Halleck was watching Sherman's operations carefully. There were such things as war crimes even in the 1860's. Halleck wanted to avoid hurting civilians as much as possible.

In the full context of the war, General Lee, for example did not destroy civilian farms as part of his war policies. Had he done so, Northern newspapers would have condemned him severely.
