The pictures were of close relatives or friends of those attending the Opening Ceremony. Everyone was invited to send a picture of someone close to them who had passed away recently. Danny Boyle requested photo's prior to the ceremony as he said his inspiration for doing the ceremony was his father who had sadly passed away 18months ago but who loved the Olympics and would have been 91 on the day of the Opening Ceremony 27th July 2012.
