The Pony Express began on April 3, 1860 from St. Joe, MO, and shut down just 18 months later. It consisted of a string of some 190 relay or stock stations between St. Joe, Missouri, and California. 80 young men, many orphans, and 500 horses made up the Pony Express. The Express made 308 transcontinental runs covering 606,000 miles and carried almost 35,000 pieces of mail. In its 18 months of existence, only one mail pouch was lost!!
