The down and dirty answer is whoever would pay them. Often artists of the time would have a work commissioned by a patron. Much as if I asked you to paint my portrait and you did so in exchange for money. This was the normal means. Artists of the time rarely survived on income from their art but did many things. Very few artists would received commissions that would last more than a month or so then they had to find other means of support. It was also rare that an artist would produce a work and then sell said piece. Materials for producing art were expensive in comparison to today and artists could not afford to front money for supplies etc.
