At a large airport that handles commercial aircraft, the first controller that the pilot contacts is the ground controller. That controller is stationed in the control tower and directs the movement of the aircraft from the gate to the end of the runway. The pilot then contacts the local controller who directs traffic on the runways and in the local vicinity of the airport. The local controller is also in the control tower and clears the aircraft for takeoff. After the aircraft is airborne, the pilot contacts the departure controller who locates the aircraft on RADAR and directs the aircraft out of the terminal area. At that point, the pilot contacts the Air Route Traffic Control Center. Center then locates the aircraft on RADAR and directs it to the terminal area of the airport at which the aircraft will land. Center "hands off" the aircraft to the approach controller who locates the aircraft on RADAR and guides it to the final approach course of the runway that will be used for the landing. When the aircraft is on final approach, the approach controller will hand the aircraft off to the local controller who clears the aircraft to land. When the aircraft has landed and has taxied clear of the runway, the pilot contacts the ground controller who directs the aircraft to the gate.

The Harrier Plane can also fly?

.....vertically at take-off and landing.

Can you land and takeoff a plane on autopilot?

There are auto landing systems where the plane can get to the ground following a laser flight plath - Taking off is much simpler of the two as a plane whose airframe is set to take off needs just the speed, direct and it will climb when the yoke is pulled back

Can you carry a sat-nav on a plane?

Yes. But you must turn them off during take off and landing.

Does a plane sound louder taking off or landing?

A plane sounds much louder landing than on take-off. A single engine land plane revs up the engine to maximum power for take-off and climb-out. Maximum power equates with maximum noise. While landing, the same aircraft typically has the engine idling. Idling equates with minimum noise.

What is the plane that can start with a vertical liftoff then switch to level flight called?

VSTOL = Vertical or Short Take Off and Landing aircraft. Whereas a STOL aircraft is a Short Take Off and Landing Aircraft. Maybe there is a term VTOL just for Vertical Take Off and Landing.

Why do foot rests have to be raised on airplanes for take off and landing?

no obstructions if the plane needs to be evacuated in an emergency

Why do aeroplane takes wheels inside when flying?

The landing gear is retracted after take-off. This is because, when the plane is flying at great speed the landing gear produces a lot of drag. This slows the plane down. So the landing gears are retracted.

Can you use your i pod on a plane?

Yes, just turn off the Wi-Fi & don't use it during take off or landing.

Would you prefer to travel by train or plane and Why?

I'd say train because then you don't have the soreness of landing but i guess not every one gets sore ears from landing on a plane. If you don't then definitely a plane. Take off is really awesome!

Can you bring electronic toys in a plane?

You can take these type of games with you but since it is an electrical device they will probably make you turn it off during take off and landing.

What is the flapper on the plane and how do they help the plane?

Flaps are the devices that extend off the back of the wing. They are used for take off as well as landing. They increase lift and reduce the speed at which airflow over the wing is disrupted, thereby resulting in a slower approach and landing speed.
