yes he did after his mother died he moved to Vienna and took menial jobs like working in a library. he sold the paintings he done when he could. In 1914 when the first world war started he volunteered for service and was accepted into the 16th bavarian reserve infantry regiment.

Most of them worked for the SS, most of them were happy to be there, away from the fighting. Some applied for a transfer, it was mainly those who enjoyed what they did that remained.
The extermination camp was located in Birkenau, also known as Auschwitz II. However, in the other camps that made up the Auschwitz group or complex, prisoners were worked to death on inadequate rations. Please see the related question.
well Dr. Josef Mengele was one of the notorious doctors that "worked" in concentration camps. Although the Nazis hired many.
Of course there were female Nazis, and some of them worked as guards (or warders) at Auschwitz and some other camps. A few were hanged for their crimes after the war. Some of them were among the most intensely sadistic guards at Auschwitz.
