The whole anthem was on the basis of 2 words, "Majulah Singapura", which translates to mean "Onward Singapore". It was selected to be the national anthem by the Singapore self-government in 1959, and formally recognized as the national anthem in 1965, when Singapore attained independance. The original anthem was composed in the key of G-major, but was changed into F-major in 2001 as it seemed to make it sound grander and more inspiring.
