The title- which in no way relates to the plot, and cannot be explained away as a metaphor for War damage ( Like Gone with the Wind, or with songs- Walking in the Rain) - the tale is essentially a selection or collection of animal Cartoons with basic characters that are essentially antrhopomorphic animals- and there adventures.

It takes plade in Edwardian England- and was published in 1908- some portions are older- as there was an illustration of an automobile with a 1905 dated license plate on it- the mixture of realism- for example cars with accurate license plates, and impossible animal society coexisting with mankind- it has a certain shock value not found, in say Bugs Bunny, at least normally. Essentially it is an animal cartoon ( of the Bugs or Mickey variety)- but with different characters written as a novel.

The lead character, Mr. Toad, gets in trouble with the law for auto theft- winds up in jail- and escapes. Not the most wholesome thing for kids.

His work often employs the use of anthropomorphism, many of his characters being animals with distinct human traits. The author wanted a series of bedtime tales for his kids- and brewed his own. this is a good idea if handled the right way. A similar motive animated A.A. Milne ( Not E.E.) to create Winnie-the-Pooh. Winnie-The-Pooh employed spelling errors- often of basic English words- as a comedy device- Not funny in an era of very real literacy crises. A major flaw of Wind in the Willows- apart from the amorphous title- which does not in any way relate to the plot.. is the fact all of the main characters are Male animals, have a sort of social club ( they appear to be adults, not children like Little Rascals) and there is an aura of homosexuality about the whole thing. Characters like Ratty and Toad never go out with girls or even discuss them. Something Gay about the whole thing.
