Alexander Graham Bell, widely credited with inventing the telephone, made his first phone call to his assistant, Thomas Watson, in 1876, while testing the speaker of his prototype.
The original model was unidirectional, allowing one person to speak into a mouthpiece, while the other person received the message through a "speaker" in another location. The two parties weren't able to hold a conversation, because each only possessed one part of the device -- either the mouthpiece, through which messages were transmitted, or the speaker, through which they were received.
According to Bell's diary, which is now on display at the Library of Congress, Watson and Bell were working in separate rooms of Bell's laboratory. Bell shouted into the mouthpiece, "Mr. Watson, come here! I want to see you!" Mr. Watson walked into the room, confirmed he'd heard Bell's voice over the speaker, and repeated the sentence.
The two men then changed places, and Mr. Watson read several book passages into the mouthpiece. Bell wrote, "It was certainly the case that articulate sounds proceeded from S [speaker]. The effect was loud but indistinct and muffled."

His assitant, Thomas Watson. He told Thomas Watson "Get over here, I need to tell you something."
