The BBC's Head of Drama, Sydney Newman, was the man primarily responsible for creating Doctor Who, and he along with Doctor Who's first producer Verity Lambert are regarded as the parents of the show. Newman was a big Science Fiction fan and wanted to make a science fiction show for the BBC. Several other writers (Donald Wilson, John Braybon, Alice Frick and Cecil Webber) also played a large part, helping to co-write the original brief for the show.

The 2007 episode 'Human Nature' in which the Doctor temporarily becomes human, the human Doctor's (fictitious) parents are named Sydney and Verity, in honour of the two creators.
