Huck recognizes the tracks of Pap, his abusive father, in the snow. Huck is frightened after seeing them because he knows that Pap is a dangerous and unpredictable person.
Huck knows his father has returned because he sees his father's footprint in the snow outside their cabin, despite the fact that his father was presumed dead. Additionally, Huck hears his father's voice inside the cabin.

Bird tracks in snow are not fossils, because snow melts and gets covered up by more snow, and so the bird that made them is probably still alive. (If it died shortly after and the tracks were still there, then they might be considered a trace fossil. ;))
