It's the "poor" to whom the Lord looks:
"...to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at My Word." (Isa.66:2)
The Literal Bible says: "...to this one will I look, to the afflicted and contrite of spirit, and trembling at My Word."
The word "poor" in the KJV, translated "afflicted" [LIT] means "depressed" [or oppressed], in mind or circumstances. Also translated elsewhere throughout the KJV: afflicted, humble, lowly, needy, poor.
The first thing a "Christian" needs to understand is that this world's god HATES Jesus Christ... and that if he would follow Christ... the world will hate him, also.
"If the world hate you, ye know that it hated Me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love its own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you." (John 15:18-19)
Jesus Christ -- the Creator of the universe [John 1:3] was "humble" and "afflicted"... and His followers are to follow His example:
"...because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow His steps: who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth..." (I Peter 2:21-22).
"...the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength. Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.
"But God chose the foolish things [people] of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things -- and the things that are not -- to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before Him." (I Cor.1:25-29 NIV)
Matthew Henry says: "...Often, a humble Christian, though poor as to this world, has more true knowledge of the gospel, than those who have made the letter of Scripture the study of their lives, but who have studied it rather as a witness of men, than as the word of God. And even young children have gained such knowledge of Divine truth as to silence infidels. The reason is, they are taught of God; the design is, that no flesh should glory in his presence..." (exerpt; Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary: First Corinthians 1, verses 26-31)
Christians are poor, because it's the poor and humble, who tremble at God's Word, to whom God reveals Himself... and His Truth.
Christians are supposed to give 10% of their income, or tithing, to the poor, just as Jacob promised in God in the Book of Genesis. Some Christians give 10%Before taxes, however most Christians give 10% of their income After taxes to the poor.
