It means that when you don't see someone for a long time, you miss them more and more every day and remember mostly positive qualities about this person. This applies strictly to something you would like back. The mind has a tendency to remember the good times and wants to relive those experiences. When something that you enjoy is removed from you ,you will put almost all the negatives out of your mind and focus solely on the good.
To me the term "absence makes the heart grow fonder" means that when someone you care for or love is away from you, you realize that regardless of what your feelings were, his or her absence makes you realize just how much that person means to you and by missing that person, it makes your heart happy :-) and you realize just how much you care for that person and want that person in your life!
It means that when somebody's away, someone else misses them and likes them more when they return. For instance: a person you're dating goes away on a business trip or something. While he/she is gone, you miss them and wish that they would return. When they do return you are so glad to see them that it seems as if you like them so much more.
This proverb means that when two persons are being separated form each other, they tend to miss each other more the longer the period they are being separated .This proverb is used particularly to describe lovers, husband and wife, and very close friends.
